As the evenings start to chill, I am getting so excited for fall and all things layered knits! I love the versatility of a cardigan as an added layer or in this case, in place of a jacket. Read on for more inspo behind this cozy sweater coat!
Bulky weight yarn like Hue + Me is much more wearable than super bulky weight, but it still has some limitations when it comes to garments. Crochet has such a thicker density than knitting, and while a crochet pullover in Hue + Me is entirely possible, I chose to design a cardigan for this inaugural collection as it’s still early in the season and the open front will be a bit less intense and offer a little breeze.
This first collection is all about simple sophistication and combining colors, so I decided on a relaxed, easy construction silhouette with bold colorwork along the back only, and some added stripes of matching colors along the front collar to tie it all together.
Since this is more of a sweater coat than a light cardi, I knew it needed pockets to hold wallets, keys, etc, and while I had originally planned to add colorwork to them as well, I didn’t want them to be too obtrusive so I worked them up in the same color as the body instead. I am so happy I did so as it kept the cardigan understated and not too over-the-top. The back mountain-inspired colorwork makes such a statement that it looks great standing alone.
You really can’t go wrong with any color combo in Hue + Me, so this could easily be worked up in any of them and look spectacular. It’s the perfect canvas to playfully show off your favorite shades or match them to school colors or any other inspo you can think of. Can’t decide on a combo? Check out this handy color theory guide to help you decide!
This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, working into the back loops only, and changing colors.

Notes: Cardigan is worked flat from the bottom up in one piece to the armholes, then the back and front panels are split and worked separately. Sleeves are worked flat from the bottom up. Turn at the end of each row. The ch 2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
Colorwork is achieved with intarsia crochet, whereby separate balls or bobbins of each color are used for each color block rather than stranding or crocheting over the unused colors. Separate contrast colors 1 and 2 into two balls each before beginning in order to do this. To change color, work the last yarn over of the previous stitch with the new color. When changing color on the right side of the work, leave the previous color at the back of the work; when changing color on the wrong side of the work, leave the previous color at the front of the work.
