I don’t know about you, but being cooped up inside so much has really had me on a home dec kick. And even more so, an organization kick. Projects are piling up, and it feels like the walls of my apartment are starting to close in. I am in desperate need of more storage solutions, which is definitely the feeling I was sitting with when I dreamed up my latest Lion Brand collab - the Slouchy Hanging Baskets! I designed these baskets in two sizes, so if you purchase a kit you’ll need to choose the size you want to make and the corresponding yarn to create that individual size, BUT the pattern you receive will have instructions for BOTH sizes. I’m a huge fan of crochet home dec patterns. The finished pieces are sturdy, durable, and functional. Knitting can create beautiful blankets and throws, but crochet wins for most other home items given its dense fabric and endless shaping opportunities. I’ve been keen to design some crochet vessels for a while now, but with so many crochet basket and bin patterns already out there, it felt silly to create something so similar to what everyone else was doing. That’s when these gorgeous hanging baskets popped up in my instagram feed, and I knew a crochet version would me AH-MAZING. How gorgeous is this inspo!?

I’ve always loved translating other materials into knit and crochet fabric, and woven baskets are a no-brainer conversion to crochet. As someone who has had several of my patterns copied nearly identically, I am very sensitive to ensuring I don’t pull inspiration from other knitwear designers (big or small), and I’m a huge advocate of utilizing non-knit or crochet items as inspiration. I’ve seen plenty of other crochet hanging basket patterns, but these felt so special and unique that I finally took the plunge.

I love the slouchy, effortlessly cool look of these baskets. Their unique shape and relaxed silhouette make them all at once casual but still so very stylish! These baskets are so roomy and functional too! Depending on how much you fold them in, they can fit a ton of items and look great in every room of the house - living room, bedroom, kitchen, even the bathroom! I imagine them used to hold books above your bedside table, fruit or veg next to the stove, toys and stuffed animals in a playroom or kids’ room, yarn in your office, or extra toilet paper in the bathroom. Whether they’re left empty or filled with goodies, they add a real element of style regardless of where they’re hung.

Getting the photos of these baskets proved incredibly difficult this time. I’ve been upstate at my place in the mountains during the shelter at home orders, and this space doesn’t get too much light unless it’s super sunny outside. We have had seemingly endless grey skies for weeks, so snapping a well-lit shot of these guys was next to impossible! Thank goodness for the magic of photoshop :) I did, however, find these beautiful, modern hooks on Amazon that look so cool with these baskets and really made the photos pop.

I loved the way the two sizes played together in the inspo photo of the original woven baskets, so I knew I wanted to design two sizes as well! Ever since I used Lion Brand’s new (is it still new?) Re-Tweed yarn for my Rosebridge and Waterbury Plaid Blanket Scarves, I’ve been in love with the entire color palette. The tiny flecks of tweedy color throughout each of them give the yarn such a cool dimension and texture. Paired with the simple single crochet used for these baskets, the resulting fabric looks so classic and sophisticated. Since this yarn comes in so many different colors that all pair beautifully together, you can create Slouchy Hanging Baskets to suit any home decor style.

The simple sophistication of these baskets also makes them appear store-bought or purchased from some highly skilled artisan - and yet, they are beginner level! All you need to know how to do is single crochet and work in the round, and these can fly off of your hook. They are the ultimate Netflix and chill project and so very meditative to create.

Beginners and seasoned crocheters alike will fall in love with this project for its ease of making and chic, modern finished result. They also make a lovely gift since so many of us are spending so much time at home. Refreshing our living spaces is so important right now to keep a calm mind and spirit.

4 skeins Lion Brand Yarn Re-Tweed in Arctic Ice or approx. 808yds/740m of another worsted weight (cat. 4) yarn for larger basket
2 skeins Lion Brand Yarn Re-Tweed in Sleet or approx. 404yds/370m of another worsted weight (cat. 4) yarn for smaller basket
Size US I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook
Removable stitch marker
Tapestry needle
Hooks

FINISHED SIZE:

(A) Diameter: 8.5”/21.5cm (small), 13.75”/35cm (large)
(B) Circumference: 27”/68.5cm (small), 43”/109cm (large)
(C) Depth: 8”/20cm (small), 12”/30.5cm (large)

GAUGE:

15 sts + 17 rounds = 4”/10cm in single crochet

Ch – chain
Rep – repeat
Sc – single crochet
Sk – skip
Sl st – slip stitch
St(s) – stitch(es)

Notes: Baskets are worked in un-joined, spiral rounds. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the start of the round. Pattern is written for two sizes: small (large).

Base:

Create a magic loop.

Round 1: Working into the magic loop, ch 1 and sc 6. Do not join. Place marker for beginning of round.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)

Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st, rep from * around. (18 sts)

Round 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around. (24 sts)

Body:

Round 18 (28): Sc around.

Rep round 18 (28) until work measures 8”/20cm (12”/30.5cm) from base. Do not break yarn.

Handle:

Next round: Ch 25, sk 5, sc around.

Next round: Sl st into each ch of handle, sc around to last st just before handle, sl st in last st.

Break yarn and rejoin along top edge into first st skipped for interior of handle.

Next round: Ch 1 and sc across edge to handle, sl st in back of each ch of handle, sl st to first sc to join.

Secure and weave in all ends.
