Mount Tremper Sweater
Sweaters are easily becoming my favorite thing to design. They seem so intimidating at first, but there are ways to simply them (drop shoulders, minimal shaping, simple stitches) that make the process enjoyable and soooo gratifying when the final product is complete. Accessories are still super fun projects, but to finish a full sweater and be able to wear it just feels so REAL.
My latest sweater design, the Mount Tremper Sweater, was conceived and started in LA, finished and photographed in Cincinnati, and broken in and named after a town in upstate New York. I love that it came on this journey with me, and now holds so many memories.
I've been loving Lion Brand Wool-Ease (the worsted weight) lately for its versatility, durability, and color range. Ever since I used it for my knitted Caravan Poncho I've been plotting a crochet sweater pattern for it too. I knew I'd be traveling in the midwest/east coast for a few months this winter so I wanted to create something that I could throw on any day, was warm but could easily fit under a jacket, and most importantly - had a turtleneck. I have been obsessed with turtlenecks this season and just had to perfect one for myself. Keep reading for more background on the inspo and design process, or scroll down for the free pattern to make this beauty for yourself. As always you can purchase a printable, ad-free PDF here or shop the yarn kit from Lion Brand Yarn here.
Half double crochet is definitely my favorite crochet stitch, so I knew that would be my go-to for this project. I love how quick it is and it doesn't leave gaping holes the way double crochet does. I knew it would work well for this sweater since I wanted it to look as modern as possible without having an overly "crochet" look to it.
My original design inspiration came from old school striped ski sweaters. I started this project just before Thanksgiving while still in LA, and then brought it to Ohio with me for the holidays. That's where it really started to take shape and the cold weather outside had me all sorts of excited to finish it. My crazy talented friend Hannah (founder of Hank's Pocket) shot the photos in Over-the-Rhine, a recently re-vamped part of Cincinnati that is full of artists and makers. I couldn't believe how comfortable the sweater turned out to be, and I knew it would be a staple in my winter wardrobe.
Before I was able to finish the final pattern I was off to New York for a whirlwind month, and although I wore the sweater consistently I still hadn't found a proper name for her yet. Finally at the end of January I made a trip to my friend's cabin upstate in the charming town of Mount Tremper and she really felt home there in the woods and the snow so I knew I'd found her namesake.
This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are single crochet, half double crochet, hdc2tog, double crochet, dc2tog, slip stitch, and seaming.
